Supporting Menopause in the workplace

Menopause is a natural life stage yet in many workplaces, it remains under-discussed and often misunderstood. According to UK GOV, the UK workforce includes approximately 4.6 million women aged 50 to 64, which is a significant portion of the workforce.

Symptoms such as hot flushes, fatigue, anxiety and poor sleep can affect focus, confidence and attendance. Many feel unable to speak up, leading to stress and early exit from work. Supporting menopause isn’t just compassionate; it’s good business and helps retain skilled staff and build an inclusive culture.

UK employers have a duty of care under the Equality Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act. While menopause itself isn’t a protected characteristic, related symptoms may be classed as a disability. National bodies like ACAS and the CIPD recommend formal menopause policies and manager training as part of good practice.

A menopause-friendly workplace typically includes:

o   Policy & awareness: Clear guidance on support, open communication and training for managers.

o   Flexible working: Options such as homeworking or adjusted hours to ease fatigue and brain fog.

o   Comfortable environment: Access to ventilation, temperature control and suitable uniforms.

o   Support networks: Employee assistance programmes, occupational health, or menopause champions.

Menopause support reduces sickness absence, boosts morale and helps retain experienced staff. It signals a genuine commitment to equality, inclusion and staff wellbeing qualities employees increasingly value.

Creating a culture where menopause can be discussed openly benefits everyone. Whether through a formal policy, training or small adjustments, UK employers have the opportunity and the responsibility to make workplaces where all stages of life are supported.
